Maharishi Patanjali has explained  it very beautifully

'Prayatnasaithilyanantasamapattibhyam.' It means, while doing Asanas , effort should be minimum. As regards the mind it should not waver but should be applied to the infinite or on our breath, so as to reduce tension. This is the direction proposed by Patanjali.
